Uganda Helmet vaccine Initiative, a local NGO that promotes the use of helmets amongst riders, says there has been a 16% decrease in the use of helmets by Boda-Boda cyclists in the last five years which has increased the risk of their lives while on the road.

The Manager of the organization Barbra Mwanje says the survey that was carried out in the last nine months among cyclists said that the high purchase price and discomfort of the helmets has failed their use.

Mwanje says they are launching a campaign for helmet use to help reduce fatal injuries caused by boda-boda cyclists by sensitizing them on the benefits of using helmets to safely protect their lives.

Meanwhile, local artiste Bobi Wine who’s been appointed Ambassador of helmet users, urges boda-boda cyclists to embrace the use of helmets as a protective measure for their lives but not to wait for police to force it on to them.
