The Ambassador of the world Agroforestry Centre, Dr.Dennis Garrity has asked government to scale up soil regeneration for landscape restoration geared towards making crops resilient to drought and helps improve farmer’s livehoods.

Garrity who is also the chairperson of Ever Green Agriculture partnership said that natural regeneration of soils will enable farmers increase the soil fertility for high crop yields with the purpose of increased   income generation for farmers.

He made the remarks while speaking at the 2nd farmer managed natural regeneration conference organized by World vision and World Agroforestry Centre at Silver Springs hotel in Bugolobi in Kampala.

Garrity said that if this method of soil regeneration is encouraged to farmers, more trees will be planted in most gardens for soil fertility and environment protection.

The Director for Environmental Affairs in the ministry of Water and Environment, Paul Mafabi said that Uganda loses 200, 000 hectares of forests each year and hence called for intervention to stop actions causing the loss of forests at a high rate.

He however, blamed the existing generation for not doing enough to avoid cutting trees which has caused environmental degradation and is bringing climate change that has impacted negatively to farmer’s crop production.
