CSOs dismiss government plans on constitutional amendments

Civil society organizations (CSOs)in Uganda have out rightly dismissed the proposed constitutional amendment on article 26 of the land act to enable government acquire private land even without due prompt compensation.

CSOs led by Irene Ovonji, the executive director FIDA Uganda said amending this article is unconstitutional because it’s not human rights based yet it contravenes several articles the same constitution.

According to Ovungi, amending this article will contrast with article 92 which prohibits passing of laws that can alter court decisions.

She said that many Uganda are going to lose security to their properties, and more people are set to remain landless.

Ovonji said that before commencement of land acquisition process the land owner must have a right to seek judicial intervention before his or her land is taken by government for public development.
