Museveni orders probe into Mukono eviction

President Museveni has today directed his statehouse office in charge of land issues to probe reports that over 600 residents of Nabuti village in Mukono town are facing eviction from their plots of land by a group of people, who claim to be landlords.

The probe committee is going to be headed by his aides, Moses Mukasa Luutu and Nakayenga Kiguli.

Many of the affected residents have been staying on the 600 hectares of this land as tenants for over the years. The land formerly belonged to Gilbert Makayi Mukasa, who died in 2004.

The tenants say that since Mukasa died, several people had come up to claim ownership of his land.

Many of those persons claiming ownership tell the sitting tenants that they are the children and grandchildren of the late Mukasa. The so called landlords ask the tenants to buy the pieces of plots of land they sit on or vacate it.

Museveni wants the probe committee also to investigate allegations that some of those claiming ownership were cited in a letter, which Mukasa wrote to the Mukono District Land Office on May 10, 2004 before he died, saying that they wanted to grab his land.

In the alleged letter, Mukasa asked the land office not to issue any land title to any of those people because they had no right over his land.

Some of the names claiming ownership of the land in question include Edith Nakayiba, Moses Musoke, Badru Wasswa, Juliet Nakyanzi and Samuel Kasozi among others.

Some of the alleged claimants recently fenced off a big part of the land blocking the tenants in their houses.

The angry residents went on rampage and uprooted the fence forcing the claimants to run away for their lives.
