The former Executive Director of Uganda National Forestry Authority (NFA), Damiano Akankwasa is out bail.

Akankwasa appeared before the head of the anti-corruption court, Justice John Bosco Katutsi on Monday who released him on a non-cash bail of 100 million shillings.

Akankwasa is alleged to have conspired with other forests officers at the authority to sign a questionable agreement that led to the loss of public funds worth three billion shillings.

The alleged agreement was reportedly signed with a company known as Beach Side Development Services to carry out illegal activities on land owned by the National Forestry Authority.

Akankwasa is jointly charged with the legal officer of NFA, Molly Kyepaka Karuhanga, who denied any involvement in the deal and has since challenged her trial before the high court.

Akankwasa is also jointly charged with Reuben Arinaitwe, a range manager with National Forest Authority and Charles Twagira, a shareholder with Beachside development services.

Justice Katutsi directed Akankwasa to report to the Court’s registrar on 14th April for a hearing date and other conditions of his bail.

Damiano Akankwasa first came into the lime light last year when he accused his wife of stealing 900 million shillings from their marital bedroom and the matter is still before Court.
