The Democratic Party (DP) is petitioning the constitutional court challenging Makerere University’s decision to kick political parties out of the guild elections.

The University Electoral Commission last week passed a resolution that no politicians and students affiliated to opposition political parties will be allowed to campaign for their representatives in the guild elections.

The Legal Advisor of DP, Mukasa Mbidde says this move by Makerere University is unconstitutional and if not reversed the party will challenge it in courts of law.

Mukasa who is also former Makerere guild president believes that students at Makerere and else where have rights to belong to any political party in Uganda and such a ban is unlawful.

The DP Legal Advisor also believes the ongoing mess in electing a new guild president is a challenge to the new Vice Chancellor of Makerere University, Pro. Venansiuos  Baryamureba.

Mbidde says that this challenge needs a person with vast experience and of reasonable age to make some pertinent decisions. Baryamureba is 36 years old.
