Information minister storms out of Parliament

The Minister of Uganda for Information and National Guidance, Kabakumba Matsiko has stormed out of parliament’s rules and discipline committee after MPs failed to keep time.

The Committee chaired by Buruuli county MP Peter Nyombi was scheduled to sit today, but the minister waited for the members in vain.

Minister Kabakumba accused the committee of torturing its witnesses after city tycoon Joseph Behakanira passed away in February this year, days after a stormy meeting with the committee.

He had been tasked to explain the investment of 2.5 billion shillings, days to opening of the Common wealth heads of government meeting in 2007, reportedly to prepare rooms for some of the guests.

She had been asked to appear before the committee to clear claims that she referred to the Public Accounts committee as a torture chamber, blaming the committee for the tycoon’s death.

Kabakumba told journalists up on walking out, that she had waited for too long and had other commitments including attending the NRM parliamentary caucus.
