Fishers in Uganda are about to be required to display number plates on their boats and hold fishing permits.

The Minister of State for fisheries, Fred Mukisa says the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries is out to reform fishing on Uganda’s lakes.

He says the ministry is working on fishing laws adding that ‘the fisheries act’ is outdated.

The Minister also says the stock of fish in Uganda’s lakes is declining due to catching of immature fish and over fishing.

The Cabinet in September last year directed the ministry of fisheries to formulate new laws to govern fishing.
