Uganda former minister calls voter's to fund their candidates

As the 2011 Uganda general elections approaches, the former Uganda Minister of Housing and Kampala NRM party district chairperson Francis Babu has appealed to Ugandan’s to emulate the Americans and fund the campaigns of the candidates they support.

Millions of Americans contributed millions of dollars of campaigns funds to help the current American Barrack Obama win the presidential elections.

Babu says the initiative will also help reduce corruption in the country because elected leaders will be more accountable to the people.

The former minister however, warned that a limit should be set to avoid only rich candidates winning elections which derails democracy. He says funding from outside countries should also be banned to avoid tying the country in unrealistic demands which the funding countries impose.

He says the president should be allowed to use government resources during campaigns because he is still the president until he hands over power to a different person.

Uganda opposition has been blaming president Museveni for using state resources to fund NRM campaigns.
