Media Clinic takes pulse of Bonn climate-change negotiations

Today (9 June) Top climate-change negotiators from China, India, the EU, Brazil, Bangladesh and the Solomon Islands made a rare joint appearance before media at a side event during the ongoing UN talks in Bonn.

With the UN negotiations often taking place behind closed doors, it is rare to get opposing sides in the same room and speaking on record.

You can watch their 90-minute media briefing here:

The event was organised by the Climate Change Media Partnership (CCMP), an alliance between the International Institute for Environment and Development, Panos and Internews, which supports media reporting on climate change.

Chairing the panel, Rod Harbinson from Panos London with the CCMP said:  ‘This event provided journalists the opportunity to challenge delegates about their contrasting positions and delegates the chance to clearly present their opinions to a world audience.’

The CCMP has been holding media clinics at UNFCCC meetings since 2007 and will do the same again at COP16 in Cancun, Mexico, later this year.

Speakers:

Mr Quamrul Islam Chowdhury, Bangladesh (Principal Negotiator G77 and Lead Coordinator, LDCs)

Ms Laurence Graff, European Commission (Head of International Climate Policy Unit)

Ambassador Collin Beck, Solomon Islands (Vice-Chair of AOSIS)

Ambassador Yu Qingtai, China (Special Representative, Climate Change Talks)
