Consumers want tough health warnings on Ugandan cigarettes

Consumer bodies in Uganda want Tabacco companies to clearly engrave the health warnings and the anti smoking warnings on Cigarette packets to reduce on the effects of cigarette smoking in the country.

The current markings on Uganda cigarette packets are small warning which is not clearly visible saying “Ministry of Health Warning, Cigarette smoking is harmful to your health.”

The effects of cigarette smoking on human health are serious and in many cases, deadly. The effects of Cigarette smoking range from destructing normal functioning of the body organs to reduction in the body’s immune system. Some of the diseases caused by smoking include lung cancer and heart diseases.

The Uganda Consumer Education Trust also wants to have bigger texts labels on cigarette packets warning people against cigarette smoking.

The Uganda Consumer Trust Spokesperson, Shaban Sserunkuma also appealed to Uganda regulatory bodies like Uganda National Bureau of Standards to enforce the display of the warnings on cigarette packets to enable the success of the campaign..
