Kiiza Besigye, 14 others charged with staging unlawful assembly

 

Uganda’s opposition leader Col. Kiiza Besigye and 14 other FDC leaders have been charged with staging an unlawful assembly last Wednesday in Kampala central business area that led to the alleged murder of an Assistant Inspector of Police (AIP) John Bosco Ariong.

Besigye and 14 other suspects including FDC Women League leader Ingrid Turinawe, Kawempe Division LC3 Chairman Hajji Mubaraka Munyagwa, Kampala Woman MP Nabilah Ssempala, and FDC woman activist Catherine Dembe appeared before Buganda Road Court Chief Magistrate Eleanor Khainza this Wednesday. Besigye was also charged with injuring a policeman and disobeying lawful orders and blocking traffic flow in Kampala.

Besigye and his co accused were represented by David Mpanga. Besigye and group were granted bail and they are to reappear in court on April 17th this year. Each surety of the suspects was bonded 50 million shillings and each of the suspects produced 20 million shillings not cash. Late Ariong was hit with an object from a building on Ben Kiwanuka Street. Eye witnesses say that a man hit the policeman with an object after he reportedly saw policemen mistreating civilians.
