Gunfire and tear gas as court brokers evict tenants on Entebbe road

A combination of police and anti riot police shoot in the air and fired tear in Namasuba on Kampala Entebbe road bringing business and traffic to a standstill as the area residents took to the streets protesting an eviction exercise by police and Court bailiffs.

The group of angry protesters attacked the police and the court bailiffs who were evicting the tenants of one Senoga. Among the tenants include a health centre called Tusubira. The protesters threw stones at the police and the court brokers and in the process the police fired tear gasand bullets in the air. The protesters took off and the eviction exercise went on.

The area LCI chairman, George William Walugembe says that the eviction was done following failure by the landlord to pay a bank loan, an allegation the occupants and the area residents refuted. The police arrested over five people in connection with the chaos but the OC police Namasuba Mr. S Baroho declined to name them before the police conclude its investigations.

Walugembe also complained that the exercise was unlawfully done as the tenants were not served with eviction letters as the law recommends.
