Uganda’s women football league has opened in Wakiso district amidst controversy with some people critical of the FUFA president Lawrence Mulindwa claiming that Mariam Kaliga was not fit to be the overall manager of the league.
The critics say that the over all managers should have been one of the ladies who have ever played football or those women who started women football in Uganda.
The league sponsored by FUFA president opened yesterday in Kajjansi on Kampala Entebbe road. Over 40 women teams from across the country are taking part in the league. They include Shooters Stars Kazo, St. Mary’s Kitende, St. Mary’s Nabweru and Nsangi Wolves among others.
Miriam Kaliga, who is also the Makindye women councilor to Wakiso district, told our news desk that the duration of the tournament would be one month. She says that the challenge they have so far faced is to collect women from their respective homes and organises them into football teams.
Mariam Kaliga says that the winner of the tournament will walk way with one million shillings, a trophy and a golden medal. The second team in the league will get 500,000 shillings, a jazzy and a silver medal. This is the third time Mariam Kaliga, who is also the coordinator of Buganda women football association and one of the directors of Bunamwaya FC is organising the women national football league.
