Government to offer low interest credit to farmers

Government has finalized a programme to offer credit to farmers for Agricultural inputs and Agro-processing in the country to enable the farmers to improve on their earnings.

This was disclosed by the minister of finance Maria Kiwanuka after mps on the National Economy committee put her on task to explain why government has neglected farmers in terms of giving them Agriculture credit.

Maria kiwanuaka said that government has solicited Agriculture credit and its going to be in the Uganda Development Bank after the bank finishes putting in place a new board.

She told mps that Uganda Development Bank will work with other commercial banks up country to channel the Agricultural credit to farmers since UDB has no branches.

She said that she is now trying to convince government to speed up rural electrification project so as people get power for Agro-processing.

She said that if electricity is in most of the parts of the country, farmers will be saved the cost of transporting Agricultural products to kampala for milling and processing.
