Basajjabalaba’s relatives tongue lashes Museveni over mistreatment

The Anti-corruption Court has canceled bail for city businessman and president Museveni’s personal friend and business ally, Hajji Hassan Basajjabalaba and sent him back to Luzira Prison amidst tears from his female relatives. Some of Basajjabalaba’s relatives were overheard as saying that Museveni is started witch-hunting him because he cooperates with some opposition politicians.

Chief Magistrate, Irene Akankwasa who in January had granted Basajjabalaba a cash bail of 60 million shillings on Wednesday rescinded her earlier decision.

Basajjabalaba is accused of forging a consent judgment which shielded him from paying 20.1 billion shillings in taxes accruing from his 142 billion shillings compensation for Nakasero city market.

Chief Magistrate, Irene Akankwasa at first granted bail to the beleaguered businessman, saying there was no evidence he snubbed Police summons over charges of forging a consent judgment, as the prosecution was alleging.

The magistrate said that he should be given chance to benefit from bail, but with stringent conditions and also ordered Basajjabalaba to deposit his passport with court.
