Pope to commemorate 50 years since Uganda martyrs were canonized

The Catholic Church in Uganda is preparing to commemorate 50 years since the Uganda Martyrs were canonized by Pope Paul VI at Rome. The archbishop of Kampala Catholic Archdiocese, Cyprian Kizito Lwanga announced the development on Sunday and urged Christians around the world to get prepared for the event.

The 22 Catholic Martyrs of Uganda were solemnly proclaimed Saints by Pope Paul VI in St. Peter’s Basilica, Rome on 18th October 1964.

The ceremony was honoured by the presence of the Cardinals, Patriarchs, Archbishops and Bishops of the Catholic Church, who gathered in Rome. Also present were representatives of the Government of Uganda and the Kabaka of Buganda.

The Pople announced that the Blessed Charles Lwanga, Matthias Mulumba Kalemba and their twenty companions were now martyrs. The Pope decreed that their memory be commemorated by the Universal Church with pious devotion, each year on 3 June.
