Parliamentary committee on human rights should address police mistreatment – Kalungu west MP

Police arresting Fatuma Zainab

Kalungu west Member of Parliament, Joseph Gonzaga, called for the removal of the parliamentary committee on human rights over failure to stop police mistreating women and other Ugandans whose rights are violated. This follows disturbing pictures of FDC woman activist Fatuma Zainab who is alleged to have been stripped naked by police officers along Masaka-Mbarara road while travelling to attend a political rally with other FDC officials including its flag bearer Dr Kiizza Byesigye over the weekend.

Sewungu says the parliamentary committee on human rights has done a disservice to the country, because it has failed to play its role of defending rights of Ugandans and the constitution, therefore demanding for its disbandment. He says the committee should sermon the police leadership to parliament to explain the behaviour of police force.

Meanwhile woman activist Maria Matembe has blasted Uganda Parliamentary Women’s Association (UWOPA) for failing to come out to condemn the act of police against Fatima Zainab. Matembe said that the women members of parliament were voted to come and defend the women, but it’s sad to see them silent on such matters.
