District chairpersons receive brand new vehicles from President Museveni

Chairpersons in the 111 districts in Uganda, have received brand new vehicles to facilitate supervision of government programmes.  This was in fulfillment of a pledge made by the President, to ensure that district local leaders are facilitated because of the significant role they play in the public service delivery process. The official handover of the vehicles was presided over by the Prime Minister Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda, at a ceremony which took place at Mandela National Stadium in Kampala. The vehicles are being given to improve on the mobility of district chairpersons and their staff in carrying out supervision, monitoring and coordination of government programmes.

Rugunda said it was because of the critical role played by local leaders in the service delivery process that the President pledged to facilitate all district chairpersons with vehicles, to enhance government programmes.

‘His Excellency has honored his pledge in full. It is the reason that I am here today to officiate at this function’, he said.

As Leader of Government Business, the Premier reminded the chairpersons to exhibit a high degree of responsibility and care, while using the vehicles to execute official duties. ‘You should develop an impeccable culture of maintenance so that these vehicles do not go to waste before they serve their usefulness’, he said. He directed the Ministry of Finance to work with the Ministry of Local Government, to procure the remaining vehicles for the newly approved districts, and also to consider the other categories of Local Government leaders who have not been catered for in this batch.

The Acting Permanent Secretary Ministry of Local Government, Genda Walala said in order to have efficient and productive Local Governments, there is need to build capacities through developing skills and providing local governments with tools and equipment. The Chairperson of the Uganda Local Government Association Fredrick Gume, hailed government for facilitating the district local leaders.

The vehicles delivered go by the trade name of MITSUBISHI L200 GL Brand, 4wd Double Cabin.
