UNBS urges electronics dealers to mind product standards

ElectronicsThe national standards enforcement body, UNBS has today raised a reminder to all electronics dealers across the country to seriously mind about buying and selling standard products so as to save the consumers from suffering from damages as a result of faults caused by the sub standard electronics.

Addressing electronics dealers in the a meeting held today in Kampala, the deputy executive director UNBS, Patricia Ejadu states that it would be very much advisable for dealers to always buy locally produced products as a way of supporting local manufacturers than always buying imported products which sometimes are not upto the necessary standards. He adds that starting the coming financial year, UNBS will be aggressively collaborating with URA and KCCA to enforce standards.

However, the manager surveillance at UNBS, Vincent Ochor and the head of inspection at UNBS, Ssewanyana Johnson raised alarm bells on products that have been noted to have always raised dangers to the consumers and among them are, Cables, extensions, switches and sockets, radios, fridges and kettles.

The standards body now urges dealers to always ensure dealing in well marked products and always seek information from the body before they buy the products.

Further more, the Uganda national bureau of standards has asked dealers in electronic appliances to ensure provision of quality services instead of being money minded. This comes at the time when several Ugandans are complaining about increased fire outbreaks that are caused by power failure and short life expectancy of electronic products.
Speaking at the  meeting with electronic dealers at UMA show ground in lugogo, the deputy executive director UNBS Patricia Ejaru said that UNBS is now moving away from the methods of enforcement and resorting to  engaging the dealers as away of enforcing standards. She said that UNBS have been grappling with enforcement in this electronic appliance sector but the results are minimal and asked  traders to conform to Pre-Export Verification of Conformity (PVOC) and ensure that all products that enters the country are pre-verified.

The meeting is aimed at grilling electronics dealers in always observing standards as they execute business.
