The Standard Chartered Bank Chief Executive Officer in Uganda, Herman Kasekende handed over the white canes to the Chairperson UNAB, Richard Anguyo at the bank’s head offices in Kampala on Monday.

Kasekende says that the bank also supports the eye care campaign in villages since there is afew eye care specialists position in rural area health clinics.

Kasekende noted that in most rural settings, the problem with eyes is worsened among the people due to lack of drugs for treatment, poverty and poor nutrition.

He asked well-wishers to support campaigns geared towards elimination of avoidable blindness among the community.

Anguyo and UNAB’s Chairperson, Ntege Kizito warned people especially drivers against abuse of white cane when the blind persons are walking on the road.

They said that police should enforce the white cane law and introduce training about white cane law to police officers and drivers so as blind persons are respected and protected while are walking.

The white cane day will be celebrated on 15th October in Moyo district under the theme: “Stronger together” and reports show that 2 million children in Uganda have benefited from eye care campaign since 2013 in a 1 million dollar expenditure.
