Agricultural ministry to emphasise modernisation of farming

The Ministry of Agriculture Animal Industry and Fisheries has said they will put much emphasis on modernizing agriculture by promoting irrigation, and supporting farmers with improved fertilizers as one way of producing for export.

Minister for Agriculture Vicent Sempijja while a delivering a key note address at a two day joint Agriculture Sector annual review at Speke resort Munyonyo said farmers practicing irrigation at small scale need to be given attention so that their produce can be strengthened to compete with the International market.

He noted that improved farming will be encouraged in the whole Country so that farmers can move from subsistence farming to commercial farming.

Sempijja further disclosed Governments commitment of supporting venerable farmers who have large scale of land and cannot do farming, saying Government will provide them with ploughing machines like tractors to support them.

In a related development, State Minister for Agriculture in charge of Animal Husbandry, Joy Kabatsi said her ministry is going to introduce high breed animals through artificial insemination that will grow faster so that farmers can be able to produce for bigger markets in order for them to earn a living.
