Activists sink holes in the draft GMO Bill

Agnes KiraboUnder their umbrella body, the Food Rights Alliance, activists have identified loopholes in the draft law that must be addressed in order to protect the rights of food producers and consumers.
The Executive Director Food Rights Alliance Agnes Kirabo pointed out that the law must have an explicit provision on labeling of GMOs so that people make an informed choice to consume or not the Genetically Modified Organisms
Kirabo said that the current bill does not provide for labeling of GMOS especially for general release on the market.
She said that a clause mandating the labeling of the GMOs in needed to ensure that the right to informed consent is not violated.
She stressed that while enacting the law, Ugandan Members of Parliament must comply with the Cartagena Protocol on Bio-safety by enabling the public to hold accountable companies responsible in the event of exposure to harm from GMOs.
