Hon. Sam Kutesa allegedly received the $500,000 bribe while he wascserving as president of the U.N. General Assembly

Opposition MPs have asked the foreign Affairs minister Sam kahamba Kutesa to explain to parliament the alleged bribe case on helping a Chinese energy company getting unlicensed oil blocks in Uganda.

The matter was raised by the Member of Parliament for Ntungamo municipality Gerald karuhanga on the floor of parliament in the Tuesday session chaired by the speaker of parliament Rebecca Kadaga.

Karuhanga was supported by Hon Theodore Ssekikubo calling for Minister Sam Kutesa to make a personal statement over this report to clear his name which has been in the media for bad reasons.

However the deputy Attorney General Mwesigwa Rukutana blocked karuhanga’s plea on ground that his assertion on Kutesa was not based on formal official document but only media reports which cannot move parliament to make a decision on the matter.

The speaker of Rebecca Kadaga ruled that she will look at all the documents on this case a give her final ruling.

Mr. Sam Kutesa was named in US court documents as having allegedly received a $500, 000 (about Shs1.8 billion) bribe to help a Chinese energy company secure business advantages in Uganda, including the potential acquisition of a Ugandan bank.

According to the allegations, Kutesa solicited the payment from Ho, purportedly for a charitable foundation that he wished to launch. In around February 2016, the money was then wired to Kutesa’s account through a bank in New York
