The Kyadondo East Member of Parliament, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, alias Bobi Wine has refuted the claims that his “people power” struggles have presidential intentions.

Bobi Wine said that the main issue is to liberate Ugandans from the political bondage before talking about the 2021 presidential elections is somehow ‘premature’

“When I was in the ghetto, my colleagues asked me to be the ghetto president. Some people have now started asking about whether I will contest for presidency or not. I do not want to speak about presidency for now if we have not built cohesion among ourselves,” Mr Kyagulanyi said.

In a press conference at his home in Magere, Wakiso District, Bobi Wine rectified that people power is just an ideology but not a political party.

“I strongly believe that anybody can structure themselves if they are organised and regain their liberty. Ugandans must know that this is not a Bobi Wine struggle but that of the whole country and that is why we are inspiring hope among those who feel pressed that we have the power to gain our freedom,

“I want you [Mr Museveni] to know that there is time when you are in power, and there will be time when you are out of power. You should therefore treat people the way you want to be treated when you leave power,

“A politician cares for the next elections but a statesman cares for the next generation. Be a statesman, Mr President.” Hon. Kyagulanyi remarked.

However, Mr Don Wanyama, the senior presidential press secretary, in a telephone interview with Daily Monitor described Mr Kyagulanyi’s remarks as an “empty rhetoric”.

“His remark needs to be dismissed with the contempt it deserves, and Bobi Wine should know that the decision whether Mr Museveni stays is made by Ugandans and not any other person,” he said.
Asked about the recent assassination of former Buyende District Police Commander, Muhammad Kirumira, Mr Kyagulanyi said such murders show how government has failed to plug security gaps.

“We long one day to sit on a global table as a conscious and credible nation and that is why we relate with the international community. But it is disturbing for the regime to call me a sell-out to the West,” Bobi Wine stated.

TEDxNakaseroWomen is back again at an event being held on 9th November 2017 at Mackinnon Suites, Kampala.

This is the fourth TEDxWomen event happening ever since TEDxNakaseroWomen started in 2013.

We are thus pleased to bring you the live coverage of the event where local speakers are presenting short, carefully prepared talks, demonstrations, and performances on a wide range of subjects to foster learning, inspiration and wonder aimed at provoking conversations that matter.

TEDxNakaseroWomen is an independently organised event focused on inspiring talks, innovations, experiences and ideas worth spreading.

“We believe that TEDxNakaseroWomen is a meaningful and timely platform for the people of Kampala to engage in ideas worth spreading, to learn and hear about innovations that often times nobody notices and to steer conversations that stimulate debate for development,” says Prossy Kawala.

The theme for the year 2017 is Bridges. The event will, therefore, explore bold insights as well as personal stories and perspectives that offer bridges across race, background, belief, opinion and the differences that divide.

African Centre for Media Excellence is holding the fourth annual lecture on Media and Politics in Africa on Wednesday, 8 November 2017, at Golf Course Hotel in Kampala, Uganda.

The main purpose of the lecture series is to explore the relationship between media and politics amidst changing technological, demographic, and political conditions on the continent.

Dr Willy Mutunga, the former chief justice and president of the Supreme Court of Kenya, is delivering this year’s  (2017) lecture.

Dr Mutunga’s lecture is titled, “Politics, Media and Judicial Independence in Africa”. “Dr Mutunga will draw on his own experience while at the judiciary to offer insight into how the cutthroat worlds of media and politics affect judicial independence on the continent,” said Dr Peter Mwesige, ACME’s executive director.

“We are honoured to have him in a year when the Supreme Court of Kenya made history by annulling the presidential election held on 8 August.” Dr Mutunga was Kenya’s chief justice and president of the Supreme Court from 2011 to 2016.

He has recently served as the Commonwealth secretary general’s special envoy to the Maldives, and as a distinguished scholar-in-residence at the Leitner Center for International Law and Justice at Fordham Law School in New York City. Before becoming chief justice, Dr Mutunga headed Ford Foundation’s East Africa office based in Nairobi.

You can watch the 4th Annual Lecture on Media and Politics in Africa below;

“Given the involving political debates taking place in East Africa, especially in Uganda and Kenya, we could not have had a better speaker that Dr Mutunga — lawyer, thinker and reform leader,” said Mr Bernard Tabaire, ACME’s director of programmes.

The Shadow Minister for Finance Tororo County MP Geoffrey Ekanya has announced that the opposition is going to present its tentative alternative budget 10 trillion shillings for the financial year 2014/15.
This came after government reading a budget of 15 trillion shillings which the opposition described as anti poor budget.
Ekanya says the yesterdays’ National Budget of 15 Trillion shillings which was presented by the Minister of Finance Maria Kiwanuka was too exaggerated which includes saying that allocating to the Ministry of works 2.5 Trillion shillings is a clear example that there was extravagancy when most of the materials used for road construction are got from Uganda.
He says most of roads are still incomplete and others have appeared on the National Budget for more than 3 times adding that it’s incredible that only 800 Kilo meters net work of roads has been completed in the last financial 2013/14 yet a lot of money was given to this ministry for roads.
He also calls fur down sizing of the cabinet, unnecessary public servants and RDCs to reduce on the cost of administration

The DP spokesman, Fred Mwesigwa says the National Identity Cards registration will give Ugandans a belonging.

However, Mwesigwa complained that the government did not give DP members jobs to work as National Identity Cards registration officials.

The Pan African Parliament (PAP)  has condemned the African Union Commission for disregarding requirements of the Protocol in the consideration and approval of the African Union Budget.

The Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), Mr. Erastus Mwencha, presented the African Union Agenda 2063 and the 2014 African Union Budget to the plenary sitting of the Pan African Parliament in Midrand, South Africa, on  Tuesday October 22, 2013.

The Protocol to the Treaty Establishing the African Economic Community provides that PAP would “discuss its budget and the budget of the Community and make recommendations thereon prior to its approval by the Assembly (of Heads of State).”

The budget was however discussed by the Permanent Representatives Council and approved by the African Union Heads of State in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in May 2013.

The President of PAP, Hon. Bethel Amadi said, “We urge that this (presentation of budget to PAP) is done. You need to support PAP in this endeavor. (PAP) is composed of representatives of the people.”

Members said that it made no meaning to present to PAP an already approved budget, since no changes could be made to it.

The Leader of Uganda’s delegation, Hon. Cecilia Atim Ogwal (FDC, Dokolo district), said the Parliament must be involved in the budget making process at the preliminary stage.

“This is the only way PAP will play an effective budgeting and oversight role,” she said.

Hon. Jacqueline Amongin (NRM, Ngora district) said it was meaningless to discuss an already approved budget.

“This is a waste of time. In future it is imperative that we are involved in the budgeting process at an early stage,” she said.

Members also appealed to governments to fund the AU budget to avoid depending on foreign donors, who set conditions and alter the Commission’s priorities.

Hon. Bernadette Lahai (Sierra Leone) said the budget was poorly presented as it lacked expected revenues, expenditures, programmes budgeted for in the last financial year, incomplete programmes and related issues.

The total regular budget for the African Union for 2014 amounts to US$308m; US$126m is expected from AU Member states while US$170m will be secured from international partners
