The Ufunguo Scholarship programme is a major education initiative to raise the level of computer literacy among young Kenyans from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.  The programme aims to benefit 1% of school leavers by providing access to quality ICT training courses managed by its delivery partner, the Institute of Advanced Technology (IAT).

Today, Computer literacy is a pre-requisite for almost every white-collar job.

This is especially true in the prevailing economic climate, in which most employers are not prepared to sponsor their employees in acquiring ICT skills, even though these are needed in their workplace.

As in many countries, Kenyans live on either side of the ‘digital divide’. The minority urban elite not only have access to higher quality general education and life-skills development but also to ICT training, both at their secondary schools and in private colleges.

Those from disadvantaged economic backgrounds – the majority – do not.

Acquiring the more technical qualifications that could lead to a career in ICT poses a bigger problem for the majority, as training for these qualifications is quite expensive.

The Ufunguo Scholarship covers the following:

  • International Computer Driving License (ICDL) – An international qualification which enables one to demonstrate their competence in use of computer applications
  • User Support Professional- Equips one with technical knowledge in computer maintenance, it covers both Hardware and software aspects
  • Network Support Specialist (N+) – Equips one with skills in handling computer networking.
  • Computer programming – Aims at providing students with an entry point for a career in programming using Visual Basic (VB) and Java Languages.
  • Web Design

Applications for the Ufunguo Scholarship are open to Young Kenyans who have either recently cleared high school or are currently in Form Four.

Application forms are available at all IAT Centre at a fee of KSh 50. There are no other charges in the application process. Alternatively download and complete an application form (see links below)

Fill in the required fields

  • Attach a recent passport size photo
  • Staple a copy of either KCSE result slip or Certificate

Completed forms should be either:

Dropped at any IAT Centre

  • You’ll not only need to be talented but also incredibly motivated and committed to excel during this demanding training programme.
  • You must be able to keep a cool head under pressure and solve complex problems using verbal and mathematical reasoning.
  • Some flying or gliding experience would of course be beneficial, but is not essential.
  • Excellent communication skills are a must so that you can deliver first class customer service.
  • This unique programme is open to any aspiring pilots between the ages of 18 – 55.
  • Aspiring pilots from school leavers to those changing career are all very welcome to apply.
  • You’ll need seven GCSEs at grade C or above (with Bs in English, Maths and a Science subject) plus three A-Levels, at grade BBC or above (General Studies excluded).
  • If you don’t have the GCSE/A-Levels (or equivalents), but hold an Honours degree at 2:1 or above, you are welcome to apply.
  • If you do meet the minimum GCSE/A-Level requirements, and you are a university graduate, there is no minimum degree class required.

You must hold a valid passport, have the ability to travel globally without restriction, and also have the right to live and work in the UK.

UNICEF publishes a report called State of the World’s Children. Next year, the theme is on children with disabilities. UNICEF would like to hear your voice, so send a one minute video reflecting your perspective on disabilities.

UNICEF Youth Video Contest Theme

Children living with disabilities have the same rights as all children: the right to live in dignity and to grow up in an environment that allows them to reach their full potential. But too often, children with disabilities face difficulties that hold them back.

Take inspiration from the theme “It’s About Ability!” which takes a positive approach to disability.

Too often, children with disabilities are shown neglected, weak or in need of pity.

But those images only perpetuate negative beliefs, which affect the way we behave.

Instead, UNICEF is looking for perspectives that can be empowering, constructive and eye-opening in their diversity. After all, children with disabilities are children first.

Take a look at the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and think about what it means to you. Do you have a disability and want to share what you’ve achieved in life or how you’re unique?

Do you know someone who is disabled – a friend or family member? How do you see them facing daily life? How does their life affect you? Maybe you’d like to portray an example of how children’s rights are not being fulfilled.

Or a situation where children are getting the rights they deserve and succeeding.

Make a one minute video showing what “It’s About Ability!” means to you, whether in the world at large or to you personally.

Be creative! Videos need to tell their perspectives in unique and creative ways. It can be anything from drama to comedy, fiction or documentary, animation or live-action.

Some “Thoughts for Inspiration”:

  • Who are you?: You might have a disability, but who are you as a person? What are you interested in or proud of? What is your world like? What are your dreams for the future?
  • Diversity: Children have a wide range of disabilities, including many that society doesn’t easily recognize. In addition, children with disabilities are diverse and embody a range of personalities and types.
  • Abilities: Children with disabilities have achieved many personal milestones and successes, either related to their disabilities or in general.
  • Barriers: What barriers exist that keep an individual from participating in society? These might be physical, social or emotional. Sometimes a small barrier can greatly hinder an individual’s progress. What can be done to help break down those barriers?
  • Representation: Do school curriculum and the media include representations of people with disabilities? Education is not just in the classroom, and including these representations encourages society to embrace disability as part of human diversity.
  • Universal design: How can people design places and products that are usable to the greatest extent possible by everyone, regardless of their ages, ability or status. This can address anything from buildings to television programs.

UNICEF Youth Video Contest: Judging Your video will be watched by global panel of media makers and youth, who will select the finalists and winners.

The finalists’ videos will be displayed on the main UNICEF website.

The winning video will be used in the 2013 State of the World’s Children launch materials, made available for broadcast around the world, and distributed through online channels.

The winning video maker will receive a SONY HDV Flipcam.

UNICEF Youth Video Contest: Criteria

  • Video content must relate to disabilities, either by expressing a personal experience or commenting on the rights and challenges faced by those with disabilities (see “Thoughts for Inspiration” above).
  • Videos must be respectful in the words and images it contains and how people are represented.
  • We welcome videos in all languages; however, for videos not in English, please provide an English language transcript of the script or subtitles.
  • All videos must be one minute (60 seconds) in length.
  • Participants must be below 25 years of age.
  • Submissions can be either by an individual or a group, and can be sponsored by an organization or corporation.
  • Each individual or group is limited to one submission.
  • All videos must be free of copyright materials, i.e. video footage or music used without permission of creator. This means you cannot take clips from the internet or television and use these images in your video.

Deadline is 15 December.

The Washington Fellowship is the new flagship program of the President’s Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI).

This program will bring over 500 young leaders to the United States each year, beginning in 2014, for leadership training and mentoring, and will create unique opportunities in Africa to put those new skills to practical use in propelling economic growth and prosperity, and strengthening democratic institutions.

The Washington Fellowship will:

  • Invest in a new generation of young African leaders who are shaping the continent’s future.
  • Respond to the strong demand by young African leaders for practical skills that can help them take their work to the next level in the fields of public service and business.
  • Deepen partnerships and connections between the United States and Africa.
  • Build a prestigious network of young African leaders who are at the forefront of change and innovation in their respective sectors.

Leaders will attend U.S. universities for training in one of three areas: public management and administration; business and entrepreneurship; and civic leadership.

Training in each of these sectors will focus on the skills young African leaders need to run better ministries, start and grow businesses, and serve their communities.

The initiative will grow to 1000 young leaders each year.

Washington Fellows will spend six weeks at top American universities and colleges that will provide tailored training in the sectors above, leveraging top faculty, cutting-edge curricula, and local opportunities to impart practical professional and leadership training.

Formal university training will be augmented by workshops, mentoring, and networking opportunities with leaders in each field, as well as internships across the United States.

For example, U.S. agencies such as the Overseas Private Investment Corporation and the Export-Import Bank will host Washington Fellows as interns to expose them to the U.S. workplace and practices, and build their technical skills.

Washington Fellows will also benefit from partnerships with American companies like Boeing, which will provide leadership training at the Boeing Leadership Center in St. Louis to extend Fellows’ campus-based training.

The Fellows will also have the chance to interact with the President during an annual Summit in Washington, D.C., along with other senior U.S. government, business, and civic leaders.
