The International Centre for Reproductive Health (ICRH) at Ghent University and the RHEA Centre for Expertise in Gender, Diversity and Intersectionality, Free University of Brussels in Belgium together with the Institute of Interdisciplinary Training and Research (IITR) at Mbarara University of Science & Technology (MUST) and the Institute of Ethics and Development Studies, Uganda Martyrs University, Uganda, are together initiating a research project, titled Mitigating adverse sexual and reproductive health outcomes through a comprehensive primary school sexuality education program in South-Western Uganda’.

The aim of the project is to develop, implement and evaluate a comprehensive sexuality education program targeting young adolescents in primary school in South-Western Uganda. The project is funded by VLIR-UOS under its support for partnerships between universities and university colleges in Flanders (Belgium) and the South looking for innovative responses to global and local challenges.

As part of this project, they are now recruiting two Ugandan PhD students to conduct research on adolescent sexual and reproductive health.

The PhD studies will be offered by the International Centre for Reproductive Health (ICRH) at Ghent University and RHEA Centre for Expertise in Gender, Diversity and Intersectionality, Free University of Brussels, Belgium.
2 FULL-TIME DOCTORAL SCHOLARSHIPS
Job description

  • To conduct Research as part of the above mentioned research project with the objective to contribute to the successful completion of this project and to obtain a PhD degree in Social Health Sciences from the ICRH Ghent University and in Philosophy and Ethics or in Political Sciences or in Sociology from RHEA Free University of Brussels.
  • The PhD studies will follow a sandwich formula for 3 years; every year the candidates will be spending a period of at least 6 months at ICRH Ghent University and RHEA Centre for Expertise in Gender, Diversity and Intersectionality, Free University of Brussels and 6 months in Uganda.

Profile of candidate

The applicant should have Ugandan nationality;

  • The PhD scholarship targets social and health sciences. The selection will consider one candidate from each of the specialties.
  • The applicant(s) should have a completed Master’s degree(s) in social sciences specifically sociology, anthropology, development studies, public health or biomedical sciences specifically, health sciences, medicine and nursing or any other closely related subject from an Internationally recognized university
  • The applicant should have an excellent academic and educational record
  • The applicant should have strong analytical and writing skills (any peer reviewed publications or previous research experience will be an advantage)
  • The applicant should be fully proficient in English
  • Having done health promotion and/or conducted research on reproductive health and/or gender related issues in Uganda or somewhere else will be considered a major advantage
  • Experience in survey research and methodology will also be considered an advantage.

  • The application deadline is 15 June at 16.00. Candidates will need to send a letter of motivation, a concept note on the a proposed research proposal, and a comprehensive curriculum vitae, which includes the names and contact details of three references to IITR Director, Dr. Viola Nilah Nyakato (vnyakato@must.ac.ug)

Scholarship Description: The PhD fellows will carry out research in statistical methodology related to the five-year project “Focus Driven Statistical Inference With Complex Data” (FocuStat), funded by the Norwegian Research Council. The themes and topics for the FocuStat project are broadly defined, inside the theory and applications of modern statistics for complex data structures. These themes in particular include Bayesian nonparametrics, model selection and averaging, methods that combine or bridge parametrics and nonparametrics, confidence distributions, new ways of combining statistical information, high-dimensional data, etc. The doctoral fellows will be members of the research group for Statistics and Biostatistics and, once appointed, a project plan will be worked out in accordance with the activities of the research group in general and those for the FocuStat project in particular.

Special call for scholarship applications for female applicants only for Masters and PhD Programmes in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Education Science (STEME).

To encourage the participation of young African female students at postgraduate level, for Masters and PhD programmes in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Education Science (STEME), the Commission of the African Union is offering a Special Call for Scholarship Applications (For Female Applicants Only) to study in reputable African Universities.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Special Scholarship, a candidate must:

i. Be a Female Citizen of an African Union Member State

ii. Be under the age of thirty five (35) years for Masters Programmes; and under forty (40) years for PhD Programmes.

iii. Be a holder of a Bachelor’s Degree in the relevant field, at the level of Upper Second Class Honours for a Masters’ Programme; and a holder of Masters’ Degree in the relevant field for a PhD Programme. The degree must be from a reputable University

iv. Have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement as evidenced by academic transcripts, and academic awards if any.

v. Have proof of admission to undertake a full time Masters or PhD programme in a recognized university of an African Union Member State.

vi. Be willing to commit to work in an African Union Member State on completion of studies for at least three (3) years.

No application will be considered without an admission letter from a university. In order to promote, intra-Africa student mobility, candidates are encouraged to seek admission to universities in countries other than their own.

The People’s Republic of China offering five (5) partial scholarships under the Zhejiang programme to Kenyans for undergraduate and postgraduate studies for the 2014/2015 academic year.

The scholarship is only guaranteed for tuition and all other expenses for the first year of study. Subsequent year of scholarship shall be based on merit.

The students are expected to pay for their air ticket to and from China. The scholarships are open to studies in areas that enhance cultural exchange, education and research.

Eligibility

Applicants must have the following conditions:

Undergraduate

  • Minimum KCSE Mean Grade of B (plain).
  • Not more than 25 years of age.
  • Strong grades on the major subjects that are key to the specialty preferred.
  • Completed Secondary Education in the last three (3) years.
  • Has KCSE certificate

Postgraduate

  • Are serving country in the public sector.
  • Completed two (2) years of continuous public service since their last degree studies.
  • Graduated with a Bachelor’s degree of at least Upper Second class honors level.
  • PhD applicants must have a relevant Master’s Degree.
  • Are below 35 years for Masters and 40 years for PhD

NB

If applicants chose programs delivered in Chinese, Chinese language proficiency will be a requirement.

After celebrating the 100th anniversary of Dr. Gübelin last year, the introduction of this scholarship coincides with the 90th anniversary of the Gübelin Gem Lab, established in 1924. The annual Dr. Eduard Gübelin Research Scholarship will support a cutting-edge research project in the field of gemmology in the broadest sense. The scholarship will be granted once a year to a scientist for a proposed research project. Depending on the type of project, the research might involve collaboration with the Gübelin Gem Lab.

Following these initial checks, the Association establishes a shortlist of suitable proposals, based on their relevance and potential. The shortlisted proposals are then forwarded to the members of the Scientific Committee, who will assess the proposals and select the project they consider is best qualified to receive the scholarship. The proposal receiving the highest number of votes by the members of the committee will earn the scholarship.

New Zealand Pacific Scholarships for Tongans

Scholarships for Tongans cover allowance of $3,000 for the first year and $1,000 for each subsequent study year to contribute to set up costs, visa-related costs and textbooks. New Zealand Regional Development Scholarships for Tongans
New Zealand Regional Development Scholarships for Tongans are available for pursuing both under-graduate and post-graduate study at a Pacific based tertiary institution. A New Zealand Regional Development Scholarship includes financial support for tuition, living costs, and return airfares. The deadline for applications is 30th April annually.

J. William Fulbright Foreign Student Scholarship for Tongans
The United States Embassy in Suva is inviting applications from resident nationals of Tonga. Scholarship for Tongans is available for pursuing Master’s degree, Ph.D. or research of up to 12 months at a US-based affiliated academic institution. Last date of submitting applications is 30th April 2014.

JIRCAS Visiting Research Fellowship Program for Tongans
Japan International Research Center for Agricultural Sciences (JIRCAS) is offering visiting research fellowship program. The fellowship covers a period of one year starting from October 1, 2014 to September 30, 2015. Applicants must have an adequate command of English and/or Japanese language. The application deadline is April 21, 2014.

KNB Scholarship for Tongans

Commonwealth Professional Fellowships for Tongans
Commonwealth Professional Fellowships provide an opportunity for mid-career professionals from Tonga. The duration of the fellowships between one and three months, which may be extended up to a maximum of six months. Application will close on 14 April 2014.

Short Term Training Awards for Tongans
Short Term Training Awards are available to Tongan individuals who will undertake training of up to one year in duration in New Zealand. Short Term Training Awards cover payment of fees, return economy air fares, an establishment grant, and a basic living allowance. STTA applications can be made at any time of the year.

 The University of Otago International Postgraduate Awards are awarded to Masters’ candidates in their thesis year of study.

Students must be in the first year of their thesis research to be eligible for an Award.

A shorter period of tenure shall be awarded in cases where four months or more of registration as a candidate for the degree have already been completed at the time of the award.

They provide an annual emolument of $13,000 for up to 1 year, the payment of the fees at international level and partial thesis expenses.

International Postgraduate Awards consist of the following three components:

a) payment of International tuition fees for the degree for which the Award is given

b) a living allowance paid monthly

c) costs incurred in the production of two copies of the hard bound thesis

Eligibility Information: Postgraduate Awards are available only to students seeking to obtain their first Masters qualification.

The University of Otago International Postgraduate Awards are open to students from all countries, with the exception of Australia, France and Germany (who are eligible for the Domestic Scholarships and Awards).

Confirmation of the Award is dependent on approval of the application to register as a Masters’ candidate and completion of the enrolment procedure.

 Scholarships are available for research programs in electrical/electronic engineering leading to PhD (3.5~ 4 years), Masters + Ph.D (4.5 years combined course) and Master’s Degree (2 years).

The programs are research based and require publishing of research results in top academic journals.

Selected candidates will be involved in government funded research projects.

Candidates will receive full tuition fee waiver and salary (Approx. 900~1000 $/month for PhD study; 600$/month for Master’s Program).

Kyungpook National University (KNU) is one of the leading national universities in Korea and ranked 2nd in terms of research productivity.

Applications for the above programs close by 1st Nov-2011 for March 2012 intake.

Students are encouraged to apply after the deadline and their applications will be considered for the subsequent intake.

Research Areas

KNU research group primarily focuses on research areas related to bio-signal processing, biomedical systems, nonlinear control and estimation.

The research group will closely work with healthcare professionals and researchers, both locally and globally.

Current research topics/projects include

(i) Developing smart biomedical systems/instruments: – Tremor cancellation technology development for smart surgical tools/devices etc.
(ii) EEG based clinical assessment tools: – Neuro-signal processing, ADHD treatment monitoring, Rehabilitation assessment for stroke patients etc.
(iii) Brain-computer interface :- Assistive devices for rehabilitation
(iv) Nonlinear control and estimation: – Fault estimation in electric vehicles, sliding mode control, sensor-less estimation for industrial drives etc.

Eligibility

·  Bachelor’s and Master’s degree holding candidates with strong academic background from electrical/ electronic/ communications engineering (EEE, ECE, and EI) are encouraged to apply. Related work experience will be advantageous.

·  University requires scores from one of the English proficiency tests (IELTS – 6; TOEFL (IBT) – 85).

Located at the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Amsterdam, the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis (ASCA) is an interdisciplinary research institute that brings together scholars active in literature, philosophy, visual culture, religious studies, film and media studies, argumentation theory and science dynamics.

Specialists in their own respective fields, ASCA’s members share a commitment to working within an interdisciplinary framework and to maintaining a close connection with contemporary cultural and political debates in society at large. Within ASCA they have joined forces to provide a stimulating environment for scholars, professionals, and graduate students from the Netherlands and abroad.

As part of its research programme, the institute supervises PhD projects, offers seminars and professional training, and hosts yearly workshops and conferences.

Tasks
The candidate is required to finish a dissertation within the contract period of 4 years.

Requirements:

·  Applicants must have a completed MA degree in a field relevant to the proposed PhD project and the research areas of ASCA before the start date of the fellowship.

PhD Fellowships

– The PhD candidate at the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Amsterdam will be appointed for 4 years under de terms of the employment currently valid for the Faculty.

– The salary for the position (on a full-time base) will be € 2042 during the first year (gross per month) and will reach € 2612 during the fourth year, in accordance with the CAO for Dutch universities.

– ASCA PhD fellows receive a tuition waiver, and have free access to the program of ASCA, NICA and the Graduate School for Humanities in Amsterdam.

Several positions are available.

Fellowship Application

·  Applications should include a description of the proposed research project (max. 2000 words), a full academic CV, and a list of MA grades.

·  Applicants must have a completed MA degree in a relevant field before the start date of the fellowship.

1. Proposal

The proposal should be concise (max. 2000 words) and address the project’s aims and scope, its contribution to scholarship, and its methods (theoretical approach, objects of research, etc). It should be divided into the following categories:

·  Provisional title

·  Name of candidate

·  Summary of 250 words

·  Central issues/aims

·  Methods

·  Objects of research

·  Work plan for four years

·  Importance for ASCA

2. Academic CV

The CV should contain full address and contact details, previous education, previous university (or relevant) employment, conference presentations, and publications.

3. MA Scores:

·  It is not necessary to submit an officially certified list of MA scores.

·  A scan of the list is sufficient.

·  Applicants must have completed all relevant coursework and examinations for the MA.

·  If the list of scores is not yet complete, please submit an overview of your scores at the time of application.

Scholarships at the University of Ghana are available to scientists working at National Agricultural Research Institutes and Universities in West Africa to pursue a Ph.D in Plant breeding.

Eight students per year will be admitted over a period of five years in the first phase of the programme.

Each student will follow a 5 year programme leading to the award of a Ph.D (Plant Breeding) upon successful completion.

The programme consists of two stages: two years of academic study at the University of Ghana and three years of field research at the student’s research station/university in his/her home country.

The course work and research will focus on the following West Africa food crops:

Cereals: maize, rice, sorghum, millet

Root and tubers: cassava and sweet potato

Legumes: cowpea and groundnut

Vegetables: tomato and pepper.

Eligibility: The WACCI programme is specifically for full-time, professional plant breeders who will make their careers breeding new cultivars of food crops.

Prospective students must have:

  • an MSc/MPhil in Plant Breeding, Plant Genetics, Plant Pathology, Horticulture, Crop Science, Applied Entomology, Applied Nematology or equivalent degree.
  • a position as an agricultural research scientist in a national research institute or university in the potential student’s home country is also essential, so that the student can return to his/her home country to conduct the field research for the PhD thesis.
  • Applicants should be under the age of 40.

The WACCI will pay a stipend that will cover reasonable personal living expenses for the duration of the degree (5 years) including the cost of a return air ticket from the students’ home countries.

Women scientists are especially encouraged to apply for a fellowship under this programme.

Deadline: 01 August each year.
