European Union joins UPDF in training Somali troops

The European Union has joined the UPDF in training the Somalis in military skills in order to enable them defend their country.

The European Union country ambassador Vincent de Visscher says they have invested 5 million Euros in the program.

This one year program to be carried out at Bihanga camp in Ibanda district is aimed at training two thousand personnel in military operations, intelligence and support.

The deployment chief of UPDF officers in Somalia Gen. Katumba Wamala explains that the program which has kicked off will run until June 2011.

Meanwhile Gen. Katumba Wamala who is the also the commander of the land forces maintains that the African Union mission forces in Somalia, in their mandate of peace keeping, they will not have direct attacks on militias there like the al-Shabaab and the Hisbul Islam.
