One of the former campaign agents of Uganda’s main opposition party: Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) of Col. Kizza Besigye in the run up to the 2001 and 2006 presidential elections, Edward Wamala Kalema has gone missing fearing arrest over alleged linkages with rebel groups.

The chairperson of FDC youth in Buganda Region, Ibrahim Kasozi told journalists at FDC head offices in Kampala yesterday that Wamala was a senior party activist operating in Kampala and other districts of Buganda region.

Kasozi says FDC is not sure whether its cadre Wamala went to exile or he was abducted and killed by intelligence networks.

Kasozi who also plans to unseat MP Michael Mabikke of Makindye East during next year’s parliamentary elections says Wamala’s whereabouts are still unknown to party members and the youth desk.

He says Wamala had no known relatives FDC officials can approach and ask whether they know where their supporter is currently.

Wamala joined opposition in 2001 and his campaign strategies gave the ruling government some hard time in 2001 and 2006 presidential elections. He became one of Besigye’s key body guards during 2006 presidential polls. Kasozi says Wamala was one of the courageous ‘boys’ who guarded Besigye in 2005 when a police constable, Asuman Magara killed FDC supporters at the king’s palace in Bulange Mengo Kampala.

Kasozi urges the central government to stop witch-hunting FDC supporters as 2011 general elections nears.

He also claims that the central government exiles, imprisons and kills many opposition supporters. Kasozi says that FDC is about to sue the government over its missing supporters like Wamala, George Mulindwa, Moses Suuna and those killed like late Tom Jjulunga among others.  Jjulunga, an FDC senior activist was shot dead last year by unknown people.
