Government recruits a total of 2000 extension workers as part of the newly formulated National Agriculture Extension Policy and strategy aimed at bringing extension services closer to the farmers across the country. The Director Agriculture Extension services in the ministry of agriculture Beatrice Byarugaba says the extension workers were recruited last year with more being recruited in phases noting that more will be recruited in every financial year.
Byarugaba adds that in implementation of this policy they will bring on board use of ICT, providing information for farmers, and increase monitoring and evaluation to ensure that the policy is effectively being implemented.
Speaking at the validation of the agricultural extension strategy and regulatory impact assessment report she adds that the policy has already been put in place and now awaits approval from cabinet before being functional in the next financial year.
