Government to revive cooperative societies and boost agribusiness

The permanent secretary for the ministry of Trade and Industry, Olaunah Emmanuel has revealed that the government is in advanced stages to revive cooperative societies as one of the ways to boost agribusiness in Uganda.

Olaunah says, the government will rebuild existing cooperatives and set up new one in those areas which have not had one as well as improve their governance for effective management.

 

He also notes that over 11,000 co-op societies are being targeted to be opened up and rebuild across the country.

Olaunah made the remarks during a stakeholders meeting for agribusiness development in Uganda.

During the same meeting, the state minister for finance, Fred Omach said the government plans to invest more in tea growing, building food reserves, distribute seeds to local farmers among other measures aimed at boosting agriculture production and trade.
