The parliamentary health committee has vowed to push for the independence of both Heart and Cancer Institutes. The committee is currently scrutinizing the Cancer Institute and Heart Institute Bills that will facilitate total autonomy of these two institutes.

Speaking to media yesterday, the committee chairman Dr. Medard Bitekyerezo said in the remaining three months the committee will concentrate on these bills to ensure they are passed. The two institutes have been grappling with funding gaps which the legislators say can be addressed if they became autonomous.  He also said that he is going to lobby members of parliament to ensure that the Uganda Aids commission is transferred from the president’s office to the mother ministry of health since the president’s office has no mandate to secrutinize the Aids commission budget.
