High blood pressure affects more whites than blacks

Blood pressure is the measure of the force of blood pushing against blood vessel walls. The heart pumps blood into the arteries (blood vessels), which carry the blood throughout the body. High blood pressure, also called hypertension, is dangerous because it makes the heart work harder to pump blood to the body and contributes to hardening of the arteries, or atherosclerosis, and to the development of heart failure.

There are two main types of blood pressure:  PRIMARY (essential) blood pressure … For most people especially adults, there is no identifiable cause of high blood pressure.

Primary high blood pressure also called essential hypertension or primary hypertension develops gradually over many years.

In about 95% of reported cases of high blood pressurein the U.S.A, the underlying cause of primary high blood pressure cannot be determined.

Primary high blood pressure remains somehow mysterious, but it has been linked to certain risk factors. High blood pressure tends to run in families and is more likely to affect men than women. Age and race also play a role in high blood pressure.

In United States of America blacks are twice as likely as whites to develop high blood pressure, although the gap is narrow around age 44.

Women aged 65 and above especially blacks have the highest incidence of high blood pressure in the world.
