How airtel avoids paying taxes

Uganda Revenue Authority is seeking to recover 211.5 billion shillings from Zain Uganda as capital gains tax the company got after selling its interests in Uganda to Airtel.

Airtel is a Dutch company.

But Zain Uganda has refused to pay claiming that the Uganda Revenue Authority has no power to collect money from Zain. Zain lawyer, Enos Tumusiime says Zain can not pay taxes to Uganda Revenue Authority because Zain is not a Uganda registered company.

Zain sold its Uganda interests to Airtel in Netherlands. The Uganda Revenue Authority learnt of the sale of Zain to Airtel and demanded taxes.
