Joshua Cheptegei Sets New World Record in the 10000 Men’s Race

Ugandan long-distance runner Joshua Cheptegei of Uganda has broken Kenenisa Bekele‘s 15-year-old 10,000M World Record, lowering it by 6 seconds in Valencia

In a period of two months, Cheptegei has broken two long-standing world records the 5,000m in Monaco 14th August 2020and now the 10,000m in Valencia 7th October 2020.

Cheptegei, 23, took Bekele’s 5,000 records at the Diamond League in Monaco in August, wiping 1.99 seconds off the 16-year-old mark when he crossed the line in 12:35.36.

“I am very excited to be given the opportunity to target the 10,000m world record,” Cheptegei said last month. “As my performance in Monaco showed, I am in outstanding form, so I would like to make the most of my current shape.

“It means something great to me. You know you are trying to write history (…) We want to make people know that the track is still exciting. We want to give it our all so that the sports lovers in the world can have the benefit of their time by seeing us now,” he said.

President Yoweri Museveni congratulated Cheptegei on his achievement, tweeting that “Ugandan is proud of you as you continue to hoist our flag high!”
