Journalists 2010 Environmental Media Awards invites entries

Journalists who report on environmental issues have another chance to be recognized for their efforts by submitting their works for the 2010 Environmental Media Awards. The awards are co-funded by Thomson Reuters Foundation, IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) and the COMplus Alliance of Communicators for Sustainable Development.

According to a statement from the organizers, the entries can be from the individual journalists or from another person recommending a particular work of a journalist.

The IUCN – Reuters – COMplus Media Awards is a worldwide competition in environmental journalism to recognise excellence in professional reporting on environmental and sustainable development issues. It fosters dialogue between journalists and experts to encourage informative reporting based on sound science.
The global winner, selected from six regional winners, receives a cash prize of US$ 5,000 and a travel grant to attend the Awards ceremony in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan in October 2010. The six regional winners receive a certificate and a cash prize of US$ 500.

The Awards are open to journalists in print and online news services throughout the world.

How to Enter

Entries can be submitted directly by authors or be nominated. Where more than one writer produced the article, the lead writer’s name should be submitted.

Applicants or nominators will be responsible for submitting a translation with the original article into English, French or Spanish. Please see entry form for details of regional translation requirements.

Direct applicants should:

  • Complete the entry form
  • Attach a copy of the published article
  • Provide a translation of the article in English, French or Spanish for articles originally written in any other language
  • Submit the above by email to media.awards@iucn.org 
    by 1700 (CET) 31 July 2010

Nominations may be made by media publishers, editors, TV producers, IUCN staff, IUCN Members, Commissions and Reuters’ representatives.

Nominators should:

  • Complete the entry form providing contact details for the writer
  • Attach a copy of the published article 
  • Provide a translation of the article in English, French or Spanish for articles originally written in any other language 
  • Submit the above by email to media.awards@iucn.org 
    by 1700 (CET) 31 July 2010

Conditions of Entry

  • IUCN, Reuters, COMplus and Thomson Reuters Foundation may use the winning articles (or excerpts) for regional and international public information purposes and to promote the Awards programme on their respective web sites, brochures and events.
  • Employees of IUCN, Reuters and COMplus are not eligible for the awards.
  • The jury’s decision will be final.

Deadline

To be eligible all entries for the 2010 IUCN – Reuters – COMplus Media Awards must be published or posted between 11 June 2008 and 31 July 2010 and received by 17:00 (CET) 31 July 2010.
