Barbie Itungo Kyagulanyi the wife of National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi has left the country.
Itungo flew out of the country from Entebbe International Airport aboard Qatar Airways on Monday evening to the US.
Leaked CCTV footage at the airport showed Itungo clearing at the immigration department before she boarded the plane. Efforts to get a comment from NUP proved futile.
Itungo’s departure comes three weeks after the family decided to fly their children to the US in what Kyagulanyi claimed was a safety measure, and two weeks after he was defeated in the presidential election.
In a subsequent interview after photos of his children at the airport leaked, Kyagulanyi claimed that for close to three years, his family members had faced numerous attacks from unknown people but that the threats had intensified in the past two months.
He said that they decided to take their children to a safer place and he and his wife resolved to stay back and continue agitating for peace and freedom in the country.
Kyagulanyi lost to the National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate and incumbent President Yoweri Museveni in an election held on January 14. He has since petitioned the Supreme Court to annul the election.
Shortly before the election, Police spokesperson Fred Enanga said that they had information that Kyagulanyi had planned to go into hiding in an embassy after casting his vote and then spread false information that he has been grabbed by security agencies in order to cause chaos.
“Kyagulanyi’s plan to hide is intended to cause a recurrence of the November incidents but security is more than ready to quash such riots,” Enanga said then.
After the election, Police and the army surrounded Kyagulanyi’s home until the High Court issued an order, declaring their presence illegal.
