The former Minister of Uganda for Ethics and Integrity, Miria Matembe has called upon the government to legalize abortion in order to save women from dying when trying to abort.
She says there are some instances when abortion is justified and government should allow women to terminate pregnancies especially in cases of incest or rape.

Matembe who was today addressing participants at a reproductive health public dialogue in Kampala said that many women and girls die in Uganda while trying to abort in secret.

She says because abortion is illegal, many women and girls are not able to seek professional services to help them abort or get treatment after abortion.

Matembe says that over 250,000 women and girls die in Uganda annually due to using crude methods to carry out abortion.

She says these deaths could be avoided if the government of Uganda legalizes abortion so that women and girls get professional services to terminate the pregnancy.
