More Electricity generation to help NRM achieve Poverty alleviation key targets

President Yoweri Museveni has said his National Resistance Movement government is to mobilise people to eradicate poverty in their own homes and communities.

He says the NRM will in the next 5years implement pledges made during elections especially promoting production and incomes.

Museveni says the government will support 6 model farmers in every parish and supporting better seeds and animal breeds, use of both organic and inorganic fertilizers, construction of water catchment reservoirs for irrigation and enhancing the marketing of agriculture products are some of the interventions.

He says under the Karamoja and Northern Uganda development programmes, the government intends to ensure more development in these lagging regions. Museveni however says corruption in the management of the two programmes remains a challenge. The president says his government is committed to fighting corruption and will arrest and prosecute all government officials stealing government funds.

Museveni says the government will also improve provision of electricity, with the completion of Bujagali dam construction next year being a key milestone. Spekaing in Kampala on Tuesday, Museveni said the government will start construction of Karuma dam by its own funds.

He says the construction of five smaller dams has been completed and feasibility studies and procure of contractor for different small dams are ongoing. He says 30 rural electrification schemes will be commissioned in September 2011 and are expected to boost production and income generation programmes of the government.
