MP Lukwago slams Speaker over ban of demonstrations at Uganda Parliament

The Member of Parliament for Kampala Central Erias Lukwago has strongly criticized the Speaker of Parliament Edward Kiwanuka Sekandi over the recent move by Parliament to ban demonstrations around the premises of Parliament.

This comes after Parliament earlier this week published new guidelines that have banned any demonstrations within the premises of Parliament.

Lukwago has told Ultimate Media that it is unfortunate that the Speaker is banning demonstrations because people have a right to demonstrate.

He says the guidelines should have been to stop violent demonstrations and not all demonstrations even those that are peaceful because that is an infringement on the rights of the people to assemble at Parliament, the Uganda national legislature.

Lukwago has also criticized the new guidelines for making it harder for members of the public to access parliament as the guidelines are now stricter on members of the public that would wish to access the premises of Parliament.

Many people usually go to parliament in processions to present petition to the speaker of Parliament or their members of Parliament.
