MPs react to former Members of Parlaiment association

Legislatures in the 9th parliament have reacted cautiously to reports that their colleagues of the last 8th parliament have established an association to push for development of the country.

Last week over 60 former MPs association headed by Bundibugyo woman MP Jane Alisemera has also opened an office and appointed the speaker of parliament Rebecca Kadaga as their patron.

The establishment of the association initially prompted some MPs to think that it will cause rift between the incumbents and former MPs. However, a number of the current MPs say they would support their former colleagues as long as their Agenda is clearly aimed at development.

Serere Woman MP, Alice Alaso

Serere woman MP Alice Alaso welcomed the new association saying most of the former Mps were still useful with potential that can still be exploited to develop the country.

She called upon her colleagues in the 9th parliament not to think of personally owned the constituency. Alaso added that her biggest fear with the new association is the source of funding to operate a situation that lives them vulnerable to interest groups. Alaso advised them to engage in setting up clear easy to indentify work plan for the country.

The Busiro East Member of Parliament Medadi Segona says he will welcome Alisemera’s team to his constituency because for him any person who brings development to his people is welcome. But like Alaso, segona’s concern is where the former legislatures are going to get the source of funding.

The Tororo county member of parliament Geoffrey Ekanya reasoned that the presence of former MPs in the different constituencies may be a blessing because it will put the current ones on their toil to always work harder for their constituencies knowing there are competitors washing them.

MP Mathius Kasamba says he was happy the defeated MPS had got something to keep them useful because if they stayed away completely from the public domain, it will be wastage of human resources. Kasamba say he would support them to mobilize for resources to run the association. Alisemera while opening the association say among the first subject they will aim at tackling would be corruption an evil that has derailed many government plans.
