MPs task National Medical Stores on drug theft

The parliamentary Public Accounts Committee is concerned over the increasing theft and disappearance of Government drugs from the National Medical Stores, which has often been blamed for the shortage of drugs in Hospitals.

The Committee chaired by Terego County MP Kassiano Wadri discovered that a lot of drugs disappear on the way calling for an urgent investigation to discover the culprits. The committee was meeting officials from Mulago hospital.

Kassiano asked the officials from Mulago to provide reconciliation order that is followed during the process of Procurement so that they can trace the missing drugs.

The members were also concerned about the expiry of drugs in stores yet public health centers do not have drugs.

The Executive Director Mulago Hospital Dr Byarugaba Baterana in his response said most drugs that expire in stores are procured for a particular disease that is anticipated but end up expiring without being distributed.

He also confirmed the issue of drug theft from the hospital but says that he has put in place mechanisms to curb the problem.
