Nankabirwa asks for more funds towards Electoral Commission

Nankabirwa RuthThe Government chief whip Ruth Nankabirwa wants the electoral commission to be given more funds to implement the electoral laws, as a way of minimizing early campaigns. During a breakfast meeting with parliamentary reporters at the Prime Minister’s office, reporters suggested that instead of parliament passing bills without quorum, the house should be retired earlier before the end of their term to give Members of Parliament time to look for votes.

Nankabirwa said members are put on pressure by aspirants who engage in early campaigns and spend most of the time in the constituency to secure their seats instead of concentrating on parliament work. She noted that unless the electoral commission is given enough funds and powers to perform its duty, reducing the term of parliament will not stop law makers from canvassing for votes yet opponents also start looking for votes at the time when elected MPs are sworn in parliament.
