Parliament implored to develop comprehensive land compensation policy

While presenting the alternative policy statement for energy and mineral development 2016/2017, the shadow minister for Energy, oil and mineral development Florence Ibi said that many people have been forcefully chased from their land even without any pay due to lack of a compensation policy. She said that with the on going discovery of mineral and exploration, a transparent policy should be developed to cater for people who have been affected and those who are yet to be affected. She noted that much as the right to land is enshrined in the constitution, little has been done to compensate the affected people.
In other news, the parliamentary commission budget for the financial year 2016/17 has been cut following a presidential directive. The parliamentary commission wanted 651 billion shillings for the financial year 2016/17 but it was forced to slash it to 540.6 billion shillings on the grounds that the president ordered not to increase parliamentary commission budget the coming financial.
The parliamentary director for  finance Okello Obabru told the legal and parliamentary committee chaired by Stephen Tashobya  that they revised their budget to suit the presidential direct though the commission has many unfunded priorities. He said that parliament is required to rent more offices for the 72 new members of parliament and 54 new staff.
The member of parliament for Bugweri county in Iganga District Abdul Katuntu said that its now time  for parliament to re-examine whether approving new districts and constituencies is more demanding since it looks like there is no value for money  in a bigger parliament .
