Police in Mufumbwe, Zambia has put Hakainde Hichilema, the country’s opposition leader under house arrest.

News reports from Mufumbwe indicate that the house of Hakainde Hichilema is surrounded by policemen and military men holding big guns. Our correspondences in Zambia say Hakainde Hichilema has been stopped from making phone calls, moving out of his fenced house and no one is allowed to come near his house unless authorised by the ruling authorities and police.

This follows political unrest that has broke out in Mufumbwe constituency in the run up to day’s parliamentary by-elections in Mufumbwe and Milanzi constituencies in North Western and Eastern Provinces. Eyewitnesses and police say Hakainde Hichilema has been arrested because his supporters had assaulted a man, they accused of impersonating a policeman.

The chairperson of Hichilema’s party (UPND), Ackson Sejani says Hichilema was arrested in one of the villages in Mufumbwe campaigning for his party candidate Elliot Kamondo. Sejan says all members and known supporters of Hichilema party are being hunted by police and others have been arrested. There is heavy police and military deployment at all polling station in Mufumbwe and Milanzi.

The people of Milanzi and Mufumbwe are voting their area MPs today after the death of their former MPs under mysterious circumstances.
