Ruling on Erias Lukwago’s petition aborted on Wednesday

The long waited ruling on embattled Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago’s petition for judicial review seeking to quash the proceedings of the tribunal which cleared way for government’s plan to ouster him aborted on Wednesday in Kampala.

The abortion followed an application by the Attorney General to the Judge, Yasin Nyanzi; to disqualify himself (Nyanzi) from handling the matter any further saying he is biased. An allegation justice Nyanzi rubbished.

The proceedings in which the Attorney General made the application were held when journalists were denied entrance at the Judge’s chambers at the High Court.

However, after the hearing, journalists were called and briefed about what took place in the chambers by the Deputy Registrar, Taddeo Asiimwe on the orders of the Judge. The Attorney General objected to the judge saying that he will not handle the matter impartially because of the earlier rulings he made in connection to Lukwago’s controversial impeachment. Lukwago’s lawyers objected to the application and the judge set his ruling on the application for January 24, 2014.
