Orphans have reported Uganda’s ambassador to china, Rutega Solomon to president Museveni that he is using his office to grab their land situated in Mutungo.

Edward Kalemba Luzira and his son Sam Mulonde reported to president Museveni’s office that Rutega and a group of other government officials grabbed the land of their late mother and grand mother respectively, Tereza Nalugwa in 2001.

The orphans allege that Rutega went to Ms Tereza Nalugwa’s home in Mutungo in 2011 and unlawfully evicted her from her land and made her to sleep under a mango tree, where she died afterwards.

Edward Kalemba says that the ambassador did not pay his mother any compensation for her house and other developments that was on the land. The law requires that a tenant can only be evicted after the tenant has been paid compensation.

Ms Nalugwa died last year but still the ambassador and his friends identified as only Bwoki, Dr. Sebuyira, Madila, Isaac and Andrew Mwenda constructed on her land new structures without the consent of her son and grand son. Kalemba says that his mother received this land in early 1950’s from Sir Edward Mutesa II. She used to pay the land tax (busuulu) for all those years. He says when their land was grabbed they reported the matter to area LCI chairman, Minister of land and Environment, RDC Nakawa, LCIII chairman Nakawa, Buganda Land Board, and Kitintale police station but no action was ever been taken. Kalemba therefore decided to report this matter to president Museveni. The Special Presidential Assistant, Ms Resty Nakayenga Kiguli confirmed the development and said that the president’s office is trying to help the orphans to reach a peaceful solution with Rutega in the following way: compensation of destroyed property and or re-instating their rightful ownership as bonafide occupants of the land in question.

Nakayenga says that so many lawyers the orphans hired in help them pulled out of the case under mysterious reasons. Some of the lawyers who pulled out of these case include Kimanje Nsibambi advocates, Kizito Lumu and co. advocates, Ms Nangwala, Rezida and co advocates, Kityo and company advocates, Kiyingi and company advocates, FIDA Uganda.

Ms Tereza Nalugwa before she died she had given the powers of attorney to his son Edward Kalemba Luzira. She gave him the powers to manage the affairs of her land in Mutungo including legal proceedings in the presence of the registrar of documents in 2004 May 30th.

The Uganda Communications Commission and the Ministry of Education and Sports (MoES) have organised a five-day ICT sensitisation workshop for secondary school head teachers as part of enhancing the usage of ICT facilities in secondary schools inUganda.

Three hundred school heads shall attend the workshop in two lots of 150 each. The workshop is scheduled to take place at the SESEMAT In-Service Training Centre, Kololo S.S., Kampala from January 15-21, 2012 as scheduled below: Lot 1, February 15-18, 2012 and Lot 2, February 18-21, 2012.

Under its universal access programme known as the Rural Communications Development Fund (RCDF), UCC has been equipping government-aided secondary schools with ICT laboratories. Each laboratory comprises either 11 solar-powered computers or 40 computers using grid power, networked to form a local area network.

To-date, such ICT laboratories have been installed in 548 government-aided secondary schools. And another lot of 275 government secondary schools are planned for the ICT laboratories for the year 2011/2012.

In addition, UCC, in conjunction with MoES, recently identified and re-tooled (trained) a number of teachers to teach computer studies in these schools.

Speaking ahead of the exercise, the Director for RCDF at UCC, Henry Bob Lyazi, said at least 800 school head teachers will be trained by mid-February this year.

Every 3rd June, people from different parts of the world and across Uganda go to Namugonfo to pay homage to the people who were killed for their faith.

Arua diocese Bishop Sabino Ocan Odoki who was the main celebrant urged all people who turned to be inspired by the courage, resilience and faithfulness of the Uganda Martyrs who gave up their life for the faith. This year’s celebrated at the Catholic shrine were led by Arua diocese.

Bishop Sabino said through their humble act of refusing to forsake their faith, the Uganda Martyrs had become heroes and made Uganda known worldwide.

Twenty two of the 24 Uganda Martyrs were burnt to death or butchered at the order of then Buganda King, Kabaka Mwanga after they disobeyed his authority and refused to renounce their newly found beliefs in Christianity.

Every June 3rd, people from different parts of the world and Uganda Christians throng Namugongo to mark the Uganda Martyrs Day. The day is in remembrance of the now 24 Uganda martyrs who were killed for their Christian faith. All the 24 Uganda Martyrs are Catholics, but they were killed along with other Anglican Christians.

Artisitic impression of burning Uganda Martyrs

At the Namugongo Uganda Martyrs Shrine, there is a shrine for Catholics and Protestants. Many Catholics world over derive a lot of inspiration from the Uganda Martyrs for having died for a faith that was new to them in the late 19th Century.

These deaths were part of a three-way religious struggle for political control of the Buganda royal court. In 1877, the Church Missionary Society in London had sent Protestant missionaries to the court, followed two years later by the French Catholic White Fathers. These two competed with each other and the Zanzibar-based Muslim traders for converts and influence. By the mid-1880s, many members of the Buganda court had converted and become proxies for the religious and nationalist conflict being played out in the court. Kabaka Mwanga II, upon his ascension to the throne, attempted to destroy the foreign influences he felt threatened the Buganda state, but was instead deposed by armed converts in 1888.

After regaining power, Mwanga II ordered the execution of all Christian coverts who refused to abide by his authority.

Twenty-two of the martyrs were Roman Catholics and were canonized by Pope Paul VI on October 18, 1964. Two other martyrs, Blessed Daudi Okelo and Blessed Jildo Irwa from northern Uganda were beautified and canonized as saints much later, bringing the number of Uganda Martyrs to 24.

Here are the profiles of all the 24 Uganda Martyrs
