He says honoring the achievements of great sportsmen will also help to salvage sports in the Uganda because it will motivate many people especially the youth to get involved in sports activities.

Mugeni says it’s a shame for the Uganda Police force band to only participate in government functions like Tereha Sita, January 26th NRM victory celebrations and Heroes days celebrations and ignore the recent Athletics Championship dubbed Akii-Bua memorial race held at Nambole National Stadium on 5th June, 2010.

The sports activist says the Akii-Bua memorial race was not even attended by officials from the government, the Uganda Olympics Committee and the Uganda National Council of Sports.

Akii-Bua is the only Ugandan Olympian Gold Medalist. He won the gold during the 1972 Munich Olympic Games.

Today (9th June, 2010), Uganda is celebrating the National Heroes day in Luweero district. The day mostly recognizes fighters during the 1981 – 1986 NRA insurgency which brought the current government of NRM to power.

President Museveni is presiding as the chief guest at the event and the Prisons, the Police and UPDF bands have already been assembled to entertain the crowd.
