Stella Nyanzi flees to Kenya

Nyanzi, of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) was beaten by Shamim Malende of the National Unity Platform (NUP) for the Kampala Woman MP.

Nyanzi fled the country on Tuesday (February 2, 2021) together with her children. She sought asylum in Kenya claiming she had become a target of the State.

Nyanzi’s lawyer, Prof George Luchiri Wajackoyah, claimed the reason for her departure was because she felt the state threatened to arrest her.

In rejoinder, however, Government Spokesperson Ofwono Opondo noted that Nyanzi had never been a threat to the leadership of the country to warrant reprisal.

“I am just learning from you that she left the country. How can we prevent somebody from leaving Uganda? She had just contested for the woman MP and lost massively. Why wasn’t she threaten then,” Ofwono wondered.

Ofwono also said that Nyanzi had been involved in so many controversies including serving a jail term and when she was released, nobody threatened her.

“Why didn’t she run away after she left jail? This is part of the opposition scheme to try and smear Uganda as a country that is not worth living in.

All presidential candidates who contested and lost are still living here including some who have disputed the results,” Ofwono added.

Nyanzi reportedly arrived in Nairobi by bus on Saturday evening aboard. She claimed she sneaked through the Uganda Kenya border disguised together with her children.

The former Makerere University research fellow was the third in the January 14, 2021 parliamentary race won by Malende.

Nyanzi was arrested in 2017 for insulting President Yoweri Museveni and sentenced to 18 months in prison. Buganda Road Court found her guilty of cyber harassment of the president after she wrote a controversial poem.

However, the High Court Judge Henry Peter Adonyo later acquitted her after she had finished serving her sentence on grounds that her right to a fair trial was violated because magistrates denied her the right to identify, prepare and call Defence witnesses.
