Watongola the MP for Kamuli district.

The Member of Parliament for Kamuli Municipality, Rehema Watongola, has blamed the rampant road accidents on the Jinja- Kamuli road on delays and failure by the contractor to place humps.

Watongola told journalist at Parliament Tuesday 26, 2016, that whereas the road designs indicated the provision of humps, no humps have been put on that road thus exposing road users to accidents.
She said there have also been delays in completing the road and asked government to prevail and ensure that the contractor speeds up his pace to r complete the road soon and avoid more deaths

The MP in particular mentioned some spots on the road between Kamuli sugar factory and the town Centre where she says require humps to prevent over speeding vehicles from knocking people down.

Watongola also says government ought to ensure that alternative specifications are all put on that road to reduce on the accidents that occur on the Jinja –Kamuli road citing Budhumbula where she says  the former LC5 chairperson Kaugu Mugaino died in an accident and that more five people have recently been killed at the same spot.

The speaker of parliament Rebecca Kadaga says that the increasing road accidents are as a result of poor planning.

Kadaga says that many roads are narrow with pedestrians and vehicles competing for space.

She also says that many laws on road safety have not been implemented.

Kadaga made the remarks while visiting the causality ward at Mulago hospital.

Ina related development, the vice Chairperson Parliamentary Forum on road safety Geoffrey Omara says that human error continues to be the major cause of accident asking the drivers to be more careful while on the roads.

The comments come as Uganda marks the road safety week under the theme Uganda @50 with safe Road users;

As we approach the festive season road users in the country have been advised to be responsible if the ever increasing road accidents are to be reduced.

This call was made by the chairperson of the Parliamentary forum on road safety Alice Alaso while speaking to media on the current trends of road accidents.

Alaso said that the situation of accidents currently is worrying and therefore something special must be done to protect the citizens.

She says that the period we are entering in is a worrying period and therefore everyone must be accountable on the road and ensure that all the laws are being implemented.

Alaso also urged the government to be strict on the road users if the lives of innocent civilians are to be saved.

The number of people dying in road accidents in Jinja district has risen.

The Jinja district traffic officer Dickson Rugundana said seven deaths were reported last month higher that the two deaths in September.

A total of twenty five accidents occurred in Jinja in October with six being fatal, thirteen serious and six minor.

Rugundana attributed the increased deaths in road accidents to reckless driving and over speeding by the drivers.

He also cited vehicles under dangerous mechanical conditions and use of unskilled drivers as some of the causes of accidents.

He however says that the traffic road monitoring has been intensified to reduce on the deaths in road accidents especially as drivers rush to make money during the nearing Christmas season.

Causes of amputation (leg cut off) are so many but diabetes is one of the leading causes of amputation of the lower limbs worldwide.

While the problems of the foot are the most frequent reason for hospitalisation among patients with diabetes, high blood sugar in diabetes puts stimulates certain cells which eat up the bones. The cells that eat up the bones weaken the bones making them soft and pudgy.

Foot ulcers if unattended to well can act as entry point for the bacteria that may lead one to have his or her legs cut off. Other causes of amputation are accidents and cancers.

Ten people have been rushed to Mulago hospital in critical conditions after the taxi they were travelling in rammed into a wheel loader tractor and overturned several times.

The accident occurred at Nsangi area near London College on Kampala- Masaka road a few kilometers from Kampala.

According to a traffic police officer, Samuel Mukesi who reached the scene after the accident, the driver of the taxi was driving at a high speed and failed to control the car while overtaking the tractor.

Mukesi says that the taxi was damaged to almost beyond repair and the injured were removed from the wreckage after cutting the taxi’s body with axes.

Mukesi has advised the drivers to drive cars soberly to avoid such voidable accidents.
